Presenting With Impact

The New Communication Reality

The past decade has seen an acceleration of messages and content, while our own attention span has decreased.

Presenting in person also has its challenges, as people often look at their phones, iPads, or laptops. A recent WSJ article, titled CEOs Are Furious About Employees Texting in Meetings (Cutter, October 28, 2025), highlights the persistent distraction in meetings.

Presenting with Impact Starts with You

Common misconceptions about presenting:
Only extroverts present well  Nervousness means you will fail  Good speakers are always serious  Perfection is necessary

None of it is true

  1. Practice, not DNA, makes a presenter
  2. Nerves mean you care, and we are human
  3. Humor can make the nerves dissipate the content palpable and engage your audience (caution: not for everyone)
  4. Perfection is unattainable and NOT the goal – delivering the message, engaging the audience is the goal
