Marketing Is Evolving – Are We Doing Enough to Prepare the Next Generation?

The actions we take today don’t just shape our own success – they pave the way for the future.

I was reminded of this recently during a video call with my two-year-old grandson. He was sipping chocolate milk from a Revela Advisors-branded coffee mug, proudly sporting a chocolate mustache.

As I watched him, I imagined what he’d be like as an adult (facial hair and all) – maybe even a future Revela employee (CEO, perhaps?). I wondered what kind of world he’d inherit and what opportunities would be available to him.

Some of that will depend on the choices he makes. But a lot of it? That’s on us – the leaders, mentors and professionals who shape the industry today.

In marketing, where information is limitless and competition is fierce, how can we ensure the next generation isn’t just equipped but empowered to succeed?

The Marketing Landscape Is More Competitive Than Ever

I see it firsthand – marketing is evolving rapidly, and breaking into the field has never been more challenging. According to a recent Content Marketing Institute survey, more than two-thirds of marketers say it’s harder to land a job in the industry today than it was five years ago.

But that’s not just a challenge – it’s a huge opportunity. As the industry shifts, there’s a growing need for fresh perspectives, new ideas and skilled talent ready to tackle modern marketing challenges. It’s up to us to find, mentor and empower the next wave of professionals who will shape the future.

So, how do we do it? Here are seven key ways I think we can nurture the next generation of marketing professionals.

1. Mentorship and Continuous Learning

I wouldn’t be where I am today without my first professional mentor, Anne Goebel (forever grateful). The best thing experienced professionals can do is pay it forward – share insights, offer guidance and help newcomers navigate the complexities of the industry.

Encourage them to keep learning through workshops, courses and certifications. Marketing never stands still, and staying ahead requires an ongoing commitment to growth.

2. Encourage Innovation and Creativity

In a crowded industry, innovation isn’t just a bonus – it’s a survival skill. Encourage young marketers to challenge norms, take risks and think differently. Fostering a culture that values fresh perspectives not only fuels personal growth but also drives the organization forward while promoting your brand.

3. Build a Strong Foundation in Data and Analytics

Data is everything in modern marketing. Equip the next generation with strong analytical skills so they can interpret data, track performance and make informed decisions. Understanding metrics and KPIs should be second nature for every marketer. So, provide access to tools and resources that enhance their analytical capabilities.

4. Foster Collaboration and Communication

Marketing is a team sport. Young professionals need to understand the importance of cross-functional collaboration with sales, product development and client services. When marketing strategies align with overall business goals, everyone wins.

5. Emphasize Ethics and Client-Centricity

Today’s consumers are more informed, selective and skeptical than ever. That means ethical marketing is non-negotiable. We need to instill transparency, authenticity and customer-first thinking in the next generation, ensuring they prioritize trust over tactics.

6. Leverage Technology and Digital Tools

The digital landscape changes daily and staying ahead means staying curious and adaptable. Young marketers need to be proficient in social media management, marketing automation, analytics and emerging digital platforms. (Side note: This applies to all of us – not just the newcomers. A little tech-savviness never hurt anyone!)

7. Provide Real-World Experience

Marketing theory is great, but real-world experience is invaluable. We need to create opportunities for internships, project-based learning and hands-on training that allow young professionals to apply what they’ve learned and gain confidence in their abilities.

Because confidence + experience = the foundation for leadership.

Building the Future Starts Today

My grandson has more than a few years to go before stepping into the workforce, but my focus remains the same: ensuring that the next generation of marketing professionals is equipped, empowered and ready to navigate a fast-moving industry.

And if you’re wondering why it matters, here’s the thing: it won’t just help them in the future – it will define you today. As organizational psychologist and Wharton professor Adam Grant so perfectly put it:

“Success depends on your ability to make other people successful.”
