Throughout life, I’ve dreamed of being a teacher, therapist and writer. In my career in Financial Services, I often joke that I’ve managed to be all three.
One thing I never envisioned? Becoming an entrepreneur. Maybe I could see myself owning a cozy café – a third place inspired by Friends or Cheers, where people gather over drinks and food, chatting with regulars about life, work and aspirations. You know the kind of spot – we’ve all had one.
Entrepreneurship didn’t align with my identity as a corporate soldier who missed the old days of suits and structured routines. I pictured my future as a mix of mentoring, teaching, traveling and cheering on my grandkids at hockey games.
Yet, a few years ago, a mentee-turned-friend planted a seed: “You should start your own business.” And, over time, others echoed it. I dismissed the idea at first. Like many, I found comfort in the safety net of a steady salary and the demand for my expertise.
Still, I had an idea – a vision of a philosophy I believed could help businesses of all shapes and sizes. This wasn’t just about starting a business. It was about creating space for a principle that had grown over my 30-year career: the belief that resilience isn’t about avoiding change but preparing for it by harnessing inflection points.
I realized this philosophy needed room to grow, and I couldn’t do that within the constraints of a corporate role. That’s when I faced a decision: to embrace the same kind of change I had helped countless others navigate.
Starting Revela Advisors wasn’t easy – entrepreneurship never is! But I knew that resilience begins with preparation, and this was my chance to live that truth.
Every new beginning is rooted in change, whether it’s chosen or forced upon us. The question isn’t if change will come, but how you prepare for it – and what you do next.
Our Philosophy: Preparation as a Path to Resilience
At Revela, our guiding philosophy serves as a North Star for navigating change. It’s simple yet powerful: preparation creates resilience, and resilience allows you to embrace change and thrive.
At every business stage, from startup to maturity, we face a constant stream of challenges and opportunities. Some changes come gradually, almost imperceptibly. Others hit suddenly, demanding immediate action. Businesses that thrive are those prepared to adapt – those with a mindset that turns change into opportunity.
Author and Columbia Business School professor Rita McGrath puts it best: “Hard facts are a lagging indicator – by the time you are facing a fact, it’s very hard to change.”
The lesson? You can’t wait for the storm to hit. Resilience comes from anticipating change, its implications and preparing to pivot before it arrives.
The Power of Inflection Points
Every business experiences moments when the trajectory can shift dramatically – these are inflection points. Whether entering a new market, responding to an industry disruption or reorganizing for growth, these moments are where preparation and decision-making converge.
The challenge is that inflection points often feel like a double-edged sword. They bring both risk and opportunity. Recognizing those inflection points – and acting decisively – separates resilient businesses from those that falter.
Netflix is a textbook example of resilience. They saw the writing on the wall with declining DVD rentals and pivoted to streaming, then later doubling down on original content.
Their success came not from luck but from anticipating and preparing for the change long before it became unavoidable. So much for “Netflix and chill.”
Preparation isn’t about predicting the future; it’s about being ready to act when the future arrives.
How prepared is your business to recognize and act on these pivotal moments?
Building Resilience: What Every Business Leader Needs to Know
Resilience comes from adaptability – being ready to act, even when circumstances don’t go as planned. Preparing your business to thrive requires:
- Reflection: Look hard at your business, industry and customers. What’s shifting beneath the surface?
- Strategy: Build plans for multiple scenarios, so you’re ready to pivot when needed.
- Action: Cultivate a culture of agility, where your team feels empowered to act decisively when challenges or opportunities arise.
The goal isn’t just survival. It’s to create a business that can navigate uncertainty with confidence and purpose.
Bridging Gaps for Businesses
I started Revela Advisors to help businesses cultivate this kind of resilience. Why try weathering the storm when you can learn when to adjust your sails and when to change course entirely?
Throughout my career, I’ve seen too many leaders paralyzed by the unexpected. Survival mode teaches hard lessons but rarely provides the tools needed to thrive.
Revela exists to help businesses move beyond survival mode. Using a sales and marketing lens, we address each business’s unique challenges – whether it’s refining branding strategies, optimizing customer engagement or streamlining operations. Every solution is tailored to their specific needs and goals.
By leveraging decades of expertise, we craft proactive strategies that turn change into a competitive advantage, positioning businesses to adapt, grow and thrive in an ever-evolving landscape.
Questions Every Business Leader Should Ask
To build resilience and prepare for inflection points, start by reflecting on these questions:
- What are the most significant changes happening in my industry, and how is my business preparing for them?
- How quickly could I adapt if my business faced a major disruption tomorrow?
- What opportunities might I be missing because I’m too focused on the present?
Actioning what’s next
By embedding resilience into your strategy, you can move beyond reacting to change and start thriving through it. Take the time to reflect on the questions above and consider how your business can better prepare for what lies ahead.
If you’d like to explore these ideas further or gain fresh perspectives on navigating change, let’s start a conversation. Revela Advisors is here to help you uncover opportunities, build resilience, and take confident steps toward the future.
